Jon Boats

Jon boats are basic open rough boats that are suitable for sport fishermen or to use as a transport boat in shallow waters. These types of boats are usually flat-bottomed with a square stern and this why they perform so well in shallow and calm waters.

Jon boats have been around for a long time and are usually fitted with an outboard motor. Originally they were always constructed in wood and there are still Jon boats made of wood to find on the market. Wooden boats are still preferred by some people, although they do require more work than other types of materials and this is why there are many other alternatives to find on the market.

The most common materials today are aluminum, polyethylene and fiberglass. These are all great materials that provide you with a boat that is both strong and resistant to damage from the water, while at the same time being light and easy to float. What type of material you’re choosing is depending on where you’re going to use your boat.

While aluminum is strong and adds extra protection if you’re driving your Jon boat in rocky areas, it is not as suitable for salty water since this can have a negative impact on the boat and have a corrosive effect which can lead to leakage and other unwanted damages.

The polyethylene is suitable for both salty water and river water and is stronger than fiberglass. Fiberglass on the other hand makes the boat quieter to move through vegetation, sand bars and when moving interiors within the boat which can be an advantage. Fiberglass is also suitable for salty water. Polyethylene is very good if you want a boat that’s a bit stronger since it can forgive quite a few rough beats. Avoid dragging this type of Jon boat over rough surfaces though.

If you know what you’re going to use your Jon boat for and you know the area well where it’s supposed to be in the water you can feel secure to choose a boat from a material that is perfect for your specific situation. If you want a boat that is easy to handle, safe to drive and that is good to use for fishing and shorter transportation, a Jon boat is a very good choice. Make sure you’re getting your boat from someone that has a lot of knowledge and you can be sure that you will have a boat that’s perfect for your needs.
